Since the beginning of the year, the number of cars stolen in Davenport has dropped 35% compared to 2018. But this month, the police department reports 13 vehicles have been stolen, including a car-jacking.
Lieutenant Jason Smith says they were easy targets because most of the stolen cars were unlocked with a key inside. And drivers seem to be putting convenience before prevention.
What's less convenient than your car being stolen, having to try and track it down, and filing a police report? . . . Unfortunately, there are people who will take advantage, and it's just not worth it.
Smith, Commander of Davenport's Crime Prevention Bureau, says the increase in vehicle thefts is a national trend. And it's been a problem all over the Quad Cities.
For example on Sunday night in Rock Island, someone stole a car from an Augustana College parking lot in the 3,100 block of 12th Av. near Erickson residence hall.
Smith says the majority of stolen car and vehicle burglaries are preventable. Always lock your car and take your keys, no matter where you are. And don't leave cash and valuables inside where they can be seen.
In addition, he says NOT to sit in your car in the parking lot, engrossed in your smartphone or checking receipts. Pay attention to your surroundings and make safety a way of life.
