A former car dealership in downtown Rock Island will soon be converted into commercial and office space, and new apartments. Renaissance Rock Island is working on plans for the former Zimmerman property on 5th Avenue at 18th Street.
Renaissance president, Brian Hollenback, says there's a continuing strong demand for housing downtown - for studio, one, and two bedroom units.
Hollenback says the estimated cost of the project is 12 million dollars, and construction could start a year from now. The main floor of the vacant dealership would be converted into commercial and office space, while two floors would be added on top for 45 new apartments.
Zimmerman Honda left the downtown site in 2012, and moved to Moline, along John Deere Road.
