Work will begin soon on two major building projects at Palmer College in Davenport. Wednesday it announced plans for a new Learning Commons and Experiential Learning Center.

Chancellor and CEO Dennis Marchiori says during the past ten years the college has spent 50 million dollars on capital improvements. Now it's preparing to spend 20 million more on these two projects.

"It's an investment we feel is necessary to stay cutting edge for our current students and the program we offer with the enhancements that these capital improvements will allow. In addition to that, we do have our goal for slight growth of this campus and significant growth for the college overall with its branch campuses."

The Learning Commons will be located on the west side of Brady Street, at the skywalk, and will replace the library. It will include labs, lounges, and seminar rooms. The former libary will be turned into the Experiential Learning Center with labs and "technique rooms."

Construction on the two will begin in the spring, and take three to four years to complete.

Palmer College in Davenport now has 975 students, 300 full-time employees, and an annual economic impact on this area of about 160 million dollars per year.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
