One Human Family for Teens

A group dedicated to fighting discrimination, hatred, and injustice, will try to recruit young people this weekend. One Human Family will hold an event Saturday for teenagers called "Raise Your Voice ! Change the World."

Spokesman John Walston says following a symposium last spring, a high school student contacted the group about the possibility of holding a similar event focused on teenagers.

"The earlier you can get kids starting to think about some of these issues, they become more passionate about it, hopefully they will speak up more and we can eliminate some of the discrimination and stuff like that that's happening even in our community. I mean the whole reason we have One Human Family is just to make sure everybody feels welcome and respected here in the Quad Cities."

It will include speakers and activities, and he says their goal is to make this an annual event.

It'll be held Saturday from 1 to 5 pm at the Eastern Iowa Community Colleges campus in downtown Davenport.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
