No Delay in Liggins' Next Trial

The prosecution has won the latest round in the long-running murder case against Stanley Liggins. Thursday the judge denied several defense motions, including one to postpone the next trial, and ruled his fourth trial will begin next week, as scheduled.

Liggins is accused of killing 9 year old Jennifer Lewis of Rock Island - her burning body was found near a school in Davenport in 1990. Liggins has been convicted twice of first degree murder, then a re-trial last summer ended with a hung jury.

During a hearing on Tuesday, Liggins' lawyers argued they needed more time to investigate a key witness and new evidence, and about possible misconduct by prosecutors. But Judge Marlita Greve ruled there has been no misconduct, and every other point brought up by the defense has been amply covered during the first three trials.

A final conference is set for Monday, with the new trial starting Tuesday (3/12/19) in Waterloo - the site of last summer's trial.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
