Nightly Shelter for the Homeless

Another shelter for the homeless will open in the Quad Cities tonight. For the 6th year, Kings Harvest Ministries will provide a warm place to sleep at night, until the spring.

Assistant director, Margot Hary, says the shelter is located at 824 West Third Street in downtown Davenport. Women can come in from 8 to 9 pm, then from 9 to 10 men can come in.
Hary says on an average winter night, about 75 people will sleep in the shelter, including 60 men and 15 women. But the number can rise to 90 or more during extremely cold weather.

More than 120 volunteers will help the Kings Harvest staff operate the nightly shelter.
She says the Christian service organization also gives away food, pet food, clothing, and hygiene items to people who need them.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
