The Army Sustainment Command, based on Arsenal Island, has a new leader. Wednesday during a change of command ceremony, Major General Daniel Mitchell became commanding general, replacing Major General Steven Shapiro.
Shapiro took charge of the ASC just last summer, and is retiring after a 35-year career in the US Army.
Before coming to ASC, Mitchell served as commanding general of the Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command in Warren, Michigan. Prior to that he served for one year as ASC's deputy commanding general. He also served as commander of Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Texas.
Mithcell's overseas assignments have included Iraq, Kuwait, Germany, and the Balkans region.
He was born in Waterloo, Iowa, and raised in a rural area near Peoria. He earned his commission as an officer following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1985.
