National Register Adds Illinois Sites

Illinois Hist. Preservation Agency

Sites in Morrison and Fulton are among the newest additions to the National Register of Historic Places. Today the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency announced 23 buildings, districts, and archaeological sites have been added to the National Register, that's administered by the National Park Service.

In Fulton, the Martin House was built in the 1850's in the Italianate style, with later additions considered Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts.
State officials say the Main Street Historic District in Morrison represents the community’s evolution from a grain-shipment stop along the Air Line Railroad, later the Chicago and North Western Railroad, in the 1850s to a vibrant local commercial and business
center a century later. A majority of its buildings were designed with what's called "Italianate and High Victorian Eclectic influences."

Also now on the National Register is the Warehouse Historic District in Peoria, considered to be the city’s largest and most intact concentration of industrial, warehouse, and commercial buildings, dating from the 1890s to the late 1920s.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
