Monmouth College Backs Up MAP Grant Students

As Illinois college students wait for MAP grants, another local college is telling its students to rest easy. Yesterday, Monmouth College announced it will not hold students responsible for the lack of Monetary Assistance Program funding.

Instead, the college plans to list any MAP grant charges to student accounts as "pending" for the rest of this school year. President Clarence Wyatt says that will continue during next school year if the program remains un-funded.

Wyatt came to Monmouth from Centre College in Kentucky in 2014. He's relatively new to Illinois politics, but says the state's budget problems have gone on far too long.

Nearly half of Monmouth students are eligible for MAP Grants. Illinois now owes them about $2.5 million in unpaid grants.

I am currently a senior at Augustana College, majoring in Multimedia Journalism and Mass Communication with a minor in Creative Writing. I serve as the General Manager for WAUG.fm, Augustana's online student radio station and have worked as an intern and DJ at Studstill Media Group. I report on local news for WVIK and am honored and excited to be a part of the news team. I hope to pursue a career in radio broadcasting and an eventual master's degree in English or Communications.
