Moline wants QCs residents' input for riverfront

Moline wants to know what Quad Cities residents would like to do and see along the city's riverfront and a couple of other areas. This morning (monday), the city, the Moline Foundation, WQPT, Western Illinois University, and Renew Moline kicked off " River Vision 2020." The three areas in Moline are properties near Western Illinois University called "River's Edge," an area downtown east of Interstate-74, and the Floreciente neighborhood.

Mayor Don Welvaert says several years ago, the city intentionally left out part of a plan for downtown because no one knew where the new I-74 bridge would be built. "Now that we know, we're studying the blocks from 19th to 25th streets."

The five organizations have already held one public forum, with two more scheduled. Joy Boruff, Executive Director of the Moline Foundation, says ideas from the first meeting run the gamut, from "art along Ben Butterworth parkway, some kind of amusement park, more trash cans. People want to eat along the river. They love its accessibility, here they can touch the river."

As part of River Vision 2020, WQPT has posted six videos on its web site. WIU students and local "young professionals" produced them to present their development ideas for Moline's riverfront. People can vote for their favorites HERE.

The next public forum is set for Thursday at 5:30 pm at WIU's riverfront campus, and the third and final meeting will be held on March 15th at the same time and place.
