Local residents asked for it, and now they'll receive it. Starting this weekend, the Moline Public Library will be open on Sundays, from 1 to 4 pm.
Since director, Lee Ann Fisher, started working at the library last year. She's received many requests for Sunday hours. So she and her staff decided to make that happen by closing earlier--at 8 pm instead of 9 during the week. She says the children's and adult book sections will be open Sundays, and so will the circulation desk.
"We won't have enough staff on hand to handle meetings. We also won't be planning any programs of our own on Sundays just because we won't have enough extra staff to man that."
The library will still be closed during major holiday weekends.
Fisher says the change is part of a long-term plan to improve services for the community. Within the next two years, she hopes to hold meetings where residents suggest new services for the library, such as more e-books or computer clusters.
"We're a very good library. You know, I think we're one of the best in the area. But that's the thing; you always want to be improving and not standing still. Otherwise, you get stagnant."
The Moline Public Library plans to stay open on Sundays through the end of May.
That's when staff will decide whether to continue with the Sunday hours.
