After accurately predicting spring flooding on local rivers, the National Weather Service in Davenport is forecasting a second crest on the Mississippi.
Hydrologist Jessica Brooks says as last winter's snowmelt flowed down the river from Dubuque to Burlington, a strong storm system produced more snow in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
And then it rained on top of it.
That also means the Mississippi in eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois will continue to be at or above major flood stage until mid-May or longer.
In Dubuque, the forecast is for the Mississippi River to crest in Dubuque over the weekend, reaching 5.6 feet above flood stage at Lock and Dam 11. The first crest was about half a foot lower.
In the Quad Cities, the first crest was nearly 5.7 feet above flood stage. And the 2nd crest is expected on Monday at 5.4 feet over flood stage.
