A medical marijuana grower in Rock Island is about to expand, as demand in Illinois continues to increase. On Monday, the city council approved a change in its agreement with Green Thumb Industries, also known as GTI. It'll help the company complete construction of a second building and create jobs.
Chandler Poole, Rock Island's Community and Economic Development Director, says late last year, the council approved an agreement related to GTI's $8 million expansion plan. Since then, the plan has increased to $17 million.
GTI's second cultivation building is currently under construction in Rock Island's Southwest Business Park.
Poole says it should be completed before the beginning of the year. The revised agreement may help lower GTI's property tax bill by approximately $60,000.
GTI operates two cultivation centers in Illinois, including a 45,000 square foot, indoor growing facility off Andalusia Road in Rock Island where about 100 people work. The other is located in Oglesby.
