Long Lines at COVID Vaccination Clinic

Long before 9 A.M. when Rock Island County's COVID vaccination clinic opened on Tuesday, lines of cars from both directions were waiting in Milan.

Michelle O'Neill has more.

This morning around 8:15, the health department announced its 1,000 doses of vaccine would run out before all the people in line received their injections.

Denny Hitchcock, owner of Circa 21, and his wife left their house around 7:30 A.M. to get immunized at the Greater Quad City Auto Auction on Indian Bluff Road. But they didn't even reach that road before finding the end of the line on the Milan Beltway.

Around 11:30 A.M., the Rock Island County Health Department was in the process of notifying those who were still waiting in line whether they'd get vaccinated today or not.

It's the county's second mass vaccination clinic at the auto auction site.

Last week it was for health care workers only.

But today's also included people 65 and older, first responders, essential workers, and many others.

Janet Hill, from the health department, is asking people to be patient. Demand for the vaccine is higher than the supply. And nurses health care workers from other organizations are already helping out. The department has no control over how many doses of vaccine are available to distribute.

Hill also says the mass vaccination clinic will be held every Tuesday. Other places for health care workers to get the COVID vaccine include pharmacies and Community Health Care. And on Monday (1/25/21), others in the "1B" group will be allowed to sign up for appointments.
