Legion Post 227 celebrating its centennial anniversary

Adam Guthrie

Members of the American Legion will celebrate Veterans Day in downtown East Moline by unveiling a new mural.

Monday, Post 227 will also celebrate its centennial.

The East Moline Downtown Special Service Area spent the last year researching artists for the project. Chairman Adam Guthrie says the mural is made of steel.

"So there is five plates that will go along the wall representing each branch of military service. So we have the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. It is actually two sixity inch diameter steel cut outs."

The Veterans Day celebration will begin at 1 pm with keynote speaker Army Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Kelly O'Lear. Music will be provided by the Blackhawk College Chamber Singers.

The mural will be unveiled at the end of the event.
