A recent retiree from the East Moline state prison has decided to run for the Illinois Senate. Thursday Gregg Johnson from East Moline announced his candidacy for the democratic nomination in the 36th District.
It's now represented by republican Neal Anderson from Andalusia.
Johnson says the "failed leadership" of republican governor Bruce Rauner has done great damage to Illinois.
"The construction workers who pave the roads for your daily commute have lost their jobs. Elementary school children have lost crucial opportunities to grow and learn. And high school graduates who want to get a world class education in Illinois have lost their grants. "
As a long-time member and officer of AFSCME, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees union, and experienced in negotiations, Johnson says he's willing to work together in Springfield and compromise, but promises never to compromise his values.
After graduation from Rockridge High School, Johnson was hired at the state prison and worked there for 32 years until his retirement.
