Customers of Hy-Vee will help stock food banks in eastern Iowa and northwestern Illinois. Thursday the company presented a check for 26,500 dollars to the River Bend Foodbank, based in Davenport.
Marketing Director Debbie Geisler says the federal government shutdown at the beginning of the year resulted in a lot of people turning to food banks for help. So Hy-Vee came up with a campaign in February called "Feed the Need" - asking customers to "round up" their purchases to the nearest dollar, and then matching that money to benefit food banks in eight states.
Donations for the River Bend Foodbank came from 11 Hy-Vee stores in the Quad Cities. And it will use the money to support 300 food banks, soup kitchens, and food pantries in 23 counties of Iowa and Illinois.
In all the Hy-Vee campaign raised 300,000 dollars for more than 50 food banks.
