Gun Rights Question Added to Rock Island County Ballot

Marianna Bacallao, WVIK News

Voters in Rock Island County will have a chance to voice their opinion on the Second Amendment. County Republicans gathered enough signatures to put an advisory question about gun rights on the November ballot.

Drue Mielke, Rock Island County Republican Chairman, says his goal is to send a message to Springfield and the Illinois General Assembly.

"When people say it has no teeth, I argue that it sends a powerful message. It's not like a law is going to be passed because of this in Rock Island County, but I do want... (to) clarify where the will of the people is and make sure our legislators follow it."

The referendum asks: "Should the Illinois General Assembly protect a citizen's right to keep and bear arms as defined by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution?"
