Great River Trail Renovation in Sunset Park

RI Parks and Recreation

Money is now available to fix up a key portion of the Great River Trail in Rock Island. The city has won a 25,000 dollar grant from the state, matching a 25,000 dollar grant from the Kiwanis Club, to fix up the trail around Lake Potter in Sunset Park.

Parks and Recreation Director, John Gripp, says in addition to being more than 30 years old, the trail in the park was under water during the spring flood for about three months.

"We're going to be refurbishing several sections of the path. We've got some larger trees where the roots have actually caused the path to heave. And we also want to add in some landscaping and some additional seeding along the path."

Work on this project could begin this fall.

Since the flood ended, Gripp says the Parks and Public Works departments have been working hard to restore Sunset Park - they've already cleaned up the shoreline, and now are fixing up the playgrounds.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
