A major milestone for a big construction project in Davenport. Thursday morning, Genesis Health System celebrated the "topping off" of its 150 million dollar new building on the east campus when construction workers lifted the final steel beam into place.

President and ceo, Doug Cropper, says the new building will improve efficiency by allowing Genesis to move all of its short-term medical and surgical services to one location.

"We have 16 operating rooms for instance that right now are split between west and east campuses. And pretty soon they'll all be on east in a brand new part of this building. That's exciting."

He believes this will lead to higher quality, higher safety, and greater cost efficiency - one of the goals of the merging in 1994 of Saint Luke's and Mercy hospitals.

The last beam was signed by 2,000 Genesis employees before Thursday's ceremony.

Ground was broken 3 years ago, and it should be completed next summer.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
