Franklin Elementary Reopens After Fire

A school in Moline has re-opened one year after suffering severe damage in a fire. Tuesday is the first day of classes at Franklin Elementary School since last September’s electrical fire.

Principal Michele Pittington says the community has been very supportive during the restoration.

"We've had an outpouring of support throughout the whole rebuilding procress. And overall, it's been a very positive response to just the fact that we are going to be back in our home again."

Smoke from the fire caused most of the damage to the school.

Moline superintendent Lanty McGuire says luckily the school was insured.

"So with insurance, that was a big factor. the insurance covered a lot of this. It ended up I think out of a $7 million project, we used our 1% sales tax and $2.5 million. So realistically, it was a pretty good deal."

The 275 Franklin Elementary students were temporarily housed last year at the former WIU Quad Cities campus building on 60th street overlooking John Deere Road.
