Moline Superintendent Lanty McGuire updates reporters outside Franklin School.

Classes are cancelled for the rest of the week for Franklin Elementary School in Moline. A fire on Sunday caused significant damage, and it's not yet known when it might re-open.

.Superintendent Lanty McGuire says his goal is to find an alternative site where all 270 students and 20 staff can re-locate.

"What happens when you move students in the state of Illinois - there's all kinds of hoops you have to jump through - where are they going to go, what kind of building is it. So the state of Illinois requires a lot from us as far as planning and it has to be inspected, there's a lot of different things."

He's grateful for the many offers of help, and space for classes, but  ideally the whole school will be together at whatever temporary location is chosen.

There's no damage estimate yet. But McGuire says due to water and smoke damage throughout the building everything has to be cleaned before it can re-open.

"From pencils to books to everything. The adjustor from the insurance company is going to have to decide whether it's cheaper to clean them or to dispose of them and buy new stuff. That's not really a call we're able to make."

Parents and students should check the Moline School District's website for updated information.
