The man who designed the Figge Art Museum has returned to Davenport to help the museum celebrate its tenth anniversary. Architect Sir David Chipperfield will speak at a special events tonight and tomorrow.
He says it was actually two projects - designing a museum for the site, and coming up with a concept that would help "re-generate" downtown Davenport.
Chipperfield wanted people to be able to see inside the building, and for those inside to see out, and especially to appreciate the natural beauty of the Mississippi River.
Ten years after the Figge was completed, he says he's grateful for the trust and responsibility he was given - the Figge was one of his first public projects, and his first commission in the US.
Chipperfield also disclosed he almost resigned from the project when the contractor tried to change his design for the walls and ceilings of the interior.
He's also designed projects in Des Moines, Saint Louis, Anchorage, and many others around the world.
