You don't have to travel to Chicago or New York to see a world famous painting. The Moline Public Library will show a rare Norman Rockwell original painting. "Makes Good Sense to Me" will be on display, free of charge, tomorrow and next Saturday.
Library Marketing Coordinator Kelly Giovanine says local art collector Larry Matteson wanted to show some paintings that he has accumulated over the years.
"We provide materials and resources of all kinds, and that includes cultural. To have a chance for the general public to view a rare painting without charge is, you know, pretty rare in and of itself."
The painting is an advertisment for General Motors from 1940. It was supposed to convince people to buy cars on credit, back when that wasn't done.
"He was charged with coming up with an image that portrayed trust and American values. So, he chose the American farmer. He looks very trustworthy and, you know, your mister all-America. So, that's what that did. He was saying he was buying on credit and that made sense to him so it should basically make sense to everyone else."
All are welcome to see the painting Saturday, October 27 and Saturday, November3, during normal library hours.
