Employee Theft Will Cost Scott County

WVIK News

Scott County will recover most of the money stolen by an employee of the sheriff's department, but not all. On Tuesday, the board of supervisors is scheduled to get an update on what insurance will cover, and what changes have been made to prevent another theft like this one.

Last year, it was discovered that someone stole more than 165,000 dollars, over a three- year period, and various reports mentioned the jail's former senior accounting clerk.

According to a memo from Scott County's risk manager, adding the 35,000 dollar cost of the forensic audit means a total loss of 200,000 dollars. Taking into account a deductible and partial reimbursement for the audit, the county will be paid 160,000 dollars by its insurance company.

In addition, the budget director says new accounting procedures have been implemented that should prevent this type of theft from happening again.

So far, no charges have been filed against the former employee.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
