More than 1,500 people will take time off from their normal jobs on Thursday to participate in the Day of Caring. Twice each year, the United Way organizes volunteers to work on a variety of projects for the community.
Spokeswoman Marci Zogg says suggestions come from non-profits, schools, parks, and local governments.
"We're really looking for all different kinds of projects. And this year we've got projects where they're going to be reading to kids, they're going to be updating parks, and they'll be doing financial literacy with high schoolers - you name it."
Additional projects include cleaning a chapel and the grounds at Arrowhead Ranch, sprucing up the gardens at the Quad City Botanical Center, and handing out meals at a mobile food pantry for the River Bend Foodbank.
She says some people volunteer as individuals, while others sign up as members of teams from their workplace.
The next Day of Caring will be held in September.
