Children and adults should plan ahead as they celebrate Halloween during the pandemic.

Nita Ludwig, from the Rock Island County Health Department, says COVID-19 risk can be reduced by taking a few precautions.

While trick or treating, for example, follow social distancing and other guidelines about gathering with people outside your household.

Don't crowd around doorways. And wear a face covering. She says Halloween masks are not a substitute.

Many people feel like screaming, just for stress relief. And Ludwig says, go for it. Just make sure to tell your neighbors so they don't think you're in trouble and call the police.

Local organizations and businesses that plan to host haunted houses and other Halloween activities have decided to implement COVID safety measures.

They include advance ticketing, separating groups, waiting in cars, and regular cleanings.

Some safe activities include pumpkin carving with your family, hosting a virtual party, Halloween car parade, or outdoor movie night.
