This week, people can give their input on how to rehabilitate a stretch of the Mississippi River.
The Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service and Iowa Department of Natural Resources will hold an open house on Thursday to talk about plans for restoring Mississippi River Pool 13, near Clinton.
Erica Stephens, project manager for the Rock Island district, says they hope to restore some of the original topography.
"The implementation of the locks and dams in the 30's, it changed how the river naturally worked," says Stephens. "The purpose of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration, in part, was to go back and recreate some of those habitat features."
In 1986, Congress started the Upper Mississippi River Restoration Program. And, according to Stephens, 106,000 acres of habitat have been restored.
Spokesman Samantha Heilig says the open house is an opportunity for the people who know the area best to help make decisions.
"They can help identify that a certain area, the habitat in that area used to look one way or another. Those types of things can be identified, often times, by folks that are from that local area." said Heilig.
The open house will run from 4 to 6 on Thursday at the Clinton County Administration Building.
