Clinton LumberKings to play as Elotes

Mar 22, 2019

The Clinton LumberKings will take the field with an entirely different look this summer. As part of Minor League Baseball's second annual Copa de la Diversion, for every Sunday home game the players will wear a different set of hats, jerseys, and logos.

The "Copa" is an event for Minor League Baseball teams to connect to the Latino community and its history in baseball.

Team spokesman Erik Oas says the team will change more than just their uniforms.

"So, it'll be a different team, really," said Oas. "It'll be the Elotes, which is a Hispanic, or a Latinx dish of fried corn that you can buy on the street. Kind of playing off the corn here in Iowa."

The Sunday games in Clinton will also have Latin American food and music. Proceeds from the LumberKings games, and other minor league teams participating in Copa, will go to the Lupus Foundation of America.

The Clinton Elotes will play their first game on Sunday, April 7th, against the Kane County Cougars.
