The homeless in the Quad Cities will once again benefit from a surplus at the Department of Defense. On Wednesday Moline Township began distributing 1,000 surplus blankets to local agencies.

Brant Franks from Kings Harvest Ministries picked up 60 blankets for their homeless shelter and meal site in Davenport.
Each year, Mike Malmstrom hands out some of the blankets during the annual Stand Down for Homeless Veterans.

Moline Township Supervisor Don Johnston says this is the 15th year the township has received them from the Defense Supply Center in Philadelphia.

We see fire departments hand them out to fire victims during the winter.

Other recipients include the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, police and fire departments, and townships in Rock Island County.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
