BHC Considers Raising Tuition

Black Hawk College

Tuition will probably go up next year for students at Black Hawk College. Thursday night the Board of Trustees will consider raising tuition by twelve dollars per credit hour, or about 9 percent.

Steve Frommelt, Chief Financial Officer, blames the state of Illinois and the long budget impasse.

In a normal year, Black Hawk College receives 7.2 million dollars from the State of Illinois and that makes up about 22 percent of its operating budget.

This year, students at Black Hawk are paying 135 dollars per credit hour. If his proposal is approved, it would go up to 147 dollars. Even with the increase, Frommelt says Black Hawk is still competitive with other community colleges in Illinois, where this year's tuition rates range from 102 dollars up to 157 dollars per credit hour.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
