BHC Adult Learning Center Expands on City's Dime

One of the former tenants of Watchtower Plaza is growing. Rock Island paid for a new building for the Black Hawk College Adult Learning Center, near the intersection of BlackHawk Road and 11th Street. The city helped businesses move to make way for a proposed Walmart.
Coordinator Mary Crider, says about a year ago the Adult Learning Center moved into the 14,000 square-foot building. Black Hawk also bought new equipment and added classrooms using money from the city.
She says the center first opened at Watchtower Plaza in 1999. About 100 people take courses every semester- including English as a Second Language, G.E.D, and some high school credit classes.

The $1.7 million building has six classrooms, three computer labs, and a testing room. Crider says Black Hawk hopes to have enough room to start offering college credit courses.
The Adult Learning Center is located in an area soon to be called "BlackHawk Commons Business Park." The developer, Missman Incorporated, built the Learning Center and its new headquarters right next door. A State Farm Insurance office also moved south on 11th Street, as part of the city's plans.
