Iowa homeowners and renters who have past due energy bills can avoid having their service cut off.
Today, the Iowa Utilities Board announced the winter home heating moratorium has ended, and customers who have not started a payment plan with their utility may be disconnected.
Spokesman Don Tormey says MidAmerican Energy and other utilities are willing to negotiate with people who are struggling to make payments.
"That's their best first point of contact: to contact their local utility company, see what programs are available for payment options, and go from there."
Tormey says agencies such as Community Action of Eastern Iowa may also be able to help if customers can't work out an agreement with their utility.
