"AugustFest" to Promote Census

Davenport, Scott County, and social agencies want people who live in one Davenport neighborhood to get counted. So on Thursday, several nonprofits will host a block party to encourage them to participate in the 2020 census. The neighborhood includes parts of West 6th Street and Vine, near the Central Community Circle Food Pantry.

Dave Geenen, Executive Director of the Doris and Victor Day Foundation, says all the sponsors are committed to a fair and accurate census.

"Part of that is to make sure that we educate, advocate, promote and mobilize our communities, especially those located in communities like this, a historically undercounted area, to be accounted for."

Denise Bulat, Executive Director of the Bi-State Regional Commission, says it's crucial for everyone to participate.

"If we don't see a complete count, then the funding that the city uses to help you, that not-for-profits use to help you, that federal agencies use to help you won't be here because we won't have the right numbers. So please, answer the census, trust your neighbors, and please help us."

The block party, called "AugustFest," will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. this Thursday in the 1000 block of Ash Street in Davenport. Food trucks will offer free samples. In addition there will be games, raffles, giveaways, voter registration and information about the census.
