Augustana women's cross country and track & field coach to retire

Augustana College

After 40 years, a successful coach at Augustana College is going to retire. Right after he graduated from Augustana in 1974, Fred Whiteside was hired to be an assistant coach for the men's cross country team.

He added the women's cross country in the early 80's, and became head coach of women's track and field in 1988.

Whiteside says he's enjoyed every day of being a coach.

But now he's ready to take a break from coaching seven days a week, three seasons a year.

While Whiteside was head coach for the women's track team, Augustana won 12 conference titles, and placed second in the CCIW seven times. His cross country teams won seven CCIW titles and came in second, six times.
