Augustana Remembers Dr. Beckman

Augustana College Library

A long time professor of religion at Augustana College has died. Dr. Peter Beckman passed away last week at the age of 93.

After high school, he served as a SeaBee in the South Pacific during World War II, then he attended Augustana College, graduating in 1949. While studying for his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, he returned to Augustana in 1960 and taught for 30 years in the religion department.

After retiring in 1990, Beckman and his wife moved to Tucson and then to Bainbridge Island, Washington.

A memorial service will be held next month in Washington.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
