Arconic Employees Ready to Give Christmas Food Baskets

Employees at the Arconic Davenport Works will once again deliver baskets of food to people they know need a financial boost this Christmas. Friday night about 100 workers and their families will pack hundreds of boxes so they'll be ready to deliver Saturday.

Michelle O'Neill reports.

Summary

Spokesman John Riches says the Christmas Basket program started in the 1950's when an Alcoa worker was off because of an illness. One of his co-workers passed the hat for money to buy groceries for him. Each basket includes a canned ham, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, bread, and other items needed for a traditional Christmas dinner. Riches says it's a bit like a production line with groceries placed around the perimeter of the gym in the learning center across the street from the Arconic plant in Riverdale. Union and salaried employees work side-by-side filling the boxes with food. Then the employees who nominated recipients will deliver the Christmas baskets personally on Friday.
