The Augustana Public Radio Information Service will now be available online. Volunteers for the service, known as APRIS, has been putting local newspapers and magazines on the air since 1989.
Since then, the only way to listen to the service has been through special side-band radios. But now, with help from Unity Point Health-Trinity, the service is expanding, so that anyone with access to the internet can listen in.
Tom Cunningham is one of the Quad Cities residents who get their news from APRIS, and the move online could change the way he lives.
"The program content will just flow with me wherever I am, and ultimately outside of the home," said Cunningham. "So if I'm traveling, if I'm in another city, another part of the country, I'm going to be able to keep up on Quad Cities content via the streaming."
Moving online is just one of several improvements that APRIS is planning. Also in the works are an app and making APRIS available on Alexa and other smart speakers.
The service is based at WVIK on the campus of Augustana College in Rock Island.
