Golf fans in the Quad Cities may not get to see a few of their favorites play in person next year. Today, the John Deere Classic announced the PGA Tournament will be held the second week of August instead of July because golf will return to the Olympics.
Tournament Director, Clair Peterson, says only 60 golfers will play in the Olympics. And the later dates could create a new opportunity for the classic to attract other players.
It's a one-time change. The classic will return to its regular dates in 2017.
The Olympics golf tournament coincides with the Deere Classic later dates, August 11-14, 2016. Peterson says current champion, Jordan Spieth, will probably play in Rio de Janeiro to represent the US and not defend his title.
If the Olympics were held today, the top 4 Americans in the top 15 would qualify to play. More information about golf at the 2016 Olympics is HERE.
