Talking Art with Dr. Corrine Johnson

Ways To Subscribe

The musical Little Women, directed by Dr. Corinne Johnson, will be performed Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 7:30 PM and on Sunday, May 1, 2002, at 3 PM at the Galvin Fine Arts Center on the St. Ambrose University campus.

Based on the coming-of-age novel by Louisa May Alcott, this adaptation is the musical version which debuted on Broadway in 2005. Depicting the four irrepressible March sisters (Jo, Meg, Beth & Amy), the story celebrates the importance of human individuality and continues to resonate with both readers and viewers despite its original publication in the 19th century. In particular, the beloved character of Jo March creates her own profession and personal satisfaction outside of established social norms, becoming an inspiring fictional character for numerous real-life professional female writers along the way.

Listen to the conversation here with Little Women Director and St. Ambrose Theatre Professor Dr. Corinne Johnson about the intentional choice of this production prior to her upcoming retirement this summer, the valuable lessons that students learn from a communal experience like theatre, and the many leaders working here in the Quad Cities – both inside and beyond arts organizations – that have emerged from the program and whom she has taught and mentored over the past three decades while working with undergraduates.

St. Ambrose University is in the process of eliminating their theatre major, however will continue to offer courses in theatre with reduced faculty.

The Galvin Fine Arts Center is located at 518 W. Locust St. in Davenport, IA. Tickets can be purchased online or at the Galvin’s Box office. You can also learn more on Facebook.

Dr. Johnson was the recipient of a Kennedy Center for American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Gold medallion for lifetime achievement in teaching and producing theatre in 2017. This will be her final stage production at St. Ambrose, so come and wish her well!
