Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) is hosting an information session for women interested in manufacturing work tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Blong Technology Center, 8500 Hillandale Road, Davenport, IA.
EICC Advanced Manufacturing Program Facilitator Taylor Reth says the event provides the first step for women interested in learning more about CNC machining, engineering
technology, welding and truck driving/Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
"So the sessions will be hands-on sessions, so they'll learn about our programs, learn about different career fields and then have a hands-on session." Reth said in an in-person interview with WVIK Tuesday.
The sessions will last 25 minutes, and Reth says it's important for attendees to stay for the whole event to hear from each manufacturing sector.
"At the career fair, we'll also have resources on tuition funding like GAP funding and FAFSA," Reth said. "Our academic advisor will be there to show students how to register for classes if that's what they like to do. Some of the companies coming actually hire students with no experience and train them."
The event is no longer accepting further registration. Reth says the information session expects 44 women.
WVIK asked Reth about the importance of more women in manufacturing, she says she was one of six women graduating from Iowa State in a class of 250.
"A lot of females just aren't going into manufacturing, and from my experience, it's because they feel like it's for men or they feel like they can't do it. So having a session where it's just females, they are more confident and comfortable asking questions and learning about these different programs," Reth said.
