Volunteers would work alongside city workers to remove trash and debris from landscape beds along the riverfront from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on August 6th. All volunteers will meet at the Riverview Center on Harbor Drive.
“Our priority is just to return the park to what it has been and what we want it to be,” said Kevin Jension, the Communications Manager for the City of Muscatine.
Recent flooding has caused parts of Muscatine and the surrounding areas to suffer from litter and limbs spread across the riverbank, which sparked the call for help from the United Way and the City of Muscatine.
They have worked with the Parks and Recreation staff in Muscatine to identify areas that have been most affected by the flood. Volunteers will be helping to clean up flower beds and grassy areas left ruined by the flood.
“Mostly the city staff efforts are geared toward cleaning the parking lots, hosing down the streets, and removing mud,” said Jenison. “So that leaves some of the grassy areas and planting beds to the last of the cleanup efforts, so those are the ones we can use volunteers to help clean up.”
Volunteers of all ages are welcome to come out and assist with cleanup efforts.
“We could use as many volunteers that want to come down to the riverfront,” said Jenison. “It’s a good family event if they want to make it that way.”
Anyone wanting to volunteer can register at volunteermuscatine.org.
