Possible Rate Hikes for Rock Island Residents

Residents of Rock Island may soon have to pay more for several city services.

Monday night the city council will hear the first reading of proposed increases for water, sewer, and storm water treatment of 4.5 per cent.

The basic charge for water for homeowners is now $3.68 for the first 15,000 cubic feet. If approved that would rise by 20 cents next month, and reach $4.81 in 2025.

The waste water charge would go from the current basic charge of $4.48, up 20 cents in September, and increase each year up to $5.58 in 2025.

Single family homes in Rock Island now pay $2.96 a month for storm water, and after a 25 cent increase next month, the charge would reach $4.23 in 2025.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
