Meeker May Re-join Davenport Council

City of Davenport

A former member of the Davenport City Council has agreed to serve again. Wednesday night aldermen will consider appointing Gene Meeker to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of 6th ward alderman, Jeff Justin.

Justin recently announced he's accepted a new job, in Florida, after serving on the council for nearly 10 years.

Meeker previously served as an at-large alderman for eight years, deciding not to run for re-election in 2015.

The city council decided to appoint a replacement, rather than holding a special election, because voters in the 6th ward will choose a new alderman in November anyway. And holding a special election would mean no replacement until sometime in October. The council also decided it wanted someone with prior experience, and who would not run for the seat in the fall.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
