Nina And Pinta Sail Into Davenport

Columbus Foundation

Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus' ships will sail into Davenport Tuesday. The "Pinta" and the "Nina" are scheduled to dock at Oneida Landing on East River Dr. at 1 p.m.

The ships open to the public Thursday for self-guided tours and will stay open each day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday. No reservations are necessary.

The Columbus Foundation, based in the British Virgin Islands, says the Nina was built by hand without using power tools, while the Pinta was recently built in Brazil and is larger than the caravel-style ships of the 15th century.

The Nina and Pinta stopped in Clinton last week.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
