Bettendorf Calls for Proposals to Replace Community Center

Bettendorf Feasibility Study

Bettendorf is looking for someone to redevelop some downtown property.

The Herbert Goettsch Community Center and Sunnycrest Park take up about 4 and a half acres, and on Thursday, the city issued a Request for Proposals to private developers.

Jeff Reiter is Bettendorf's Economic Development Director. He says there are several possible uses for the land.

"It could include new park space, it could include communal space where you see different types of living elements. But yeah, in total I think we're open to all types of development opportunities, and if it calls for grading the site and redeveloping it from bare dirt, we would anticipate some of those proposals may look like that."

Over the last few years, the 66-year-old community center has required expensive maintenance and renovations just to stay functional--and with shutdowns last year, most of the programs once held in the building have already relocated.

Reiter sees the redevelopment as an opportunity to draw more business into the city.

"So ultimately overall, increasing the downtown presence, the downtown tax base with more commercial property. And something that really continues to drive more people to downtown either through living, working, or opportunities for entertainment or play."

Redevelopment plans can be submitted until October 22nd, with a new owner by the end of the year.
