Eldridge Audit Identifies Improper Spending

City of Eldridge

A state audit has found more than 76,000 dollars worth of improper spending from accounts for the city of Eldridge. Thursday State Auditor Rob Sand released results of his special investigation requested by city officials.

They were concerned about former City Clerk Denise Benson, and financial transactions she processed between 2017 and October of last year (2022).

Sand says the "improper disbursements" included 42,000 dollars of personal purchases with the city credit card, 1,100 dollars of un-authorized payroll to Benson, and 16,000 dollars paid to Benson's credit card bills.

In addition, he says Eldridge city officials failed to institute policies he recommended last year - to separate financial duties, reconcile city accounts, and set up a purchasing policy.

Benson was fired last year.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office is also investigating.
