Rock Island Will Build New Basketball Courts

Thanks to a partnership with Augustana College, Rock Island will build new basketball courts in the western part of the city.

The college will build new tennis courts in Lincoln Park and the city will replace a single basketball court there with new ones in Denkmann Park.

John Gripp is Director of Parks and Recreation for the city.

At Lincoln Park, "We currently have some tennis courts and a basketball court area that's pretty dilapidated, and we don't have the funding to upgrade those facilities at the moment. So, we got together with Augustana, Augustana got together with us, and proposed the idea of constructing a six-court facility."

Gripp says currently, Denkmann Park has just two basketball courts.

"It's in really bad shape. It's been on our list to refurbish for a number of years. And the stars have lined up and we got funding opportunities that we haven't seen before frankly. And we're able to capitalize on really making a really nice outdoor basketball complex at Denkmann Park."

Denkmann Park will also get an updated shelter, sidewalks, and a new playground. The $220,000 project will be paid for with federal funds and Gripp estimates the project will be completed sometime this summer.
