Thompson comes to Rock Island from Galesburg where he served as city manager for 11 years.
The city hired Thompson after a consultant conducted a national search. Rock Island received 36 applications for the job, and Thompson was one of three finalists.
He also applied to be Scott County Administrator in 2016.
