Work Starts on Harrison Lofts
November 27, 2012
A Minneapolis company is trying to complete the foundation of a new apartment complex in Davenport before snowy weather sets in. If the construction crew succeeds, Sherman Associates will be able to erect the steel frame of the Harrison Lofts over the winter.
Matt Flynn, Senior Planning Manager for the city, says the three story building on Harrison Street in the Hilltop neighborhood will cost about 10 million dollars. The first floor will include space for two retailers, while the upstairs will have 60 apartments, from efficiencies to three bedroom units.
"There's been a significant loss of population in the central city over the past 50 years. That loss has contributed to commercial entities being less viable and just vacant structures which are not good for neighborhood vitality. We're certainly supportive of repopulating the central city."
Sherman Associates will receive state tax credits for providing "affordable workforce housing." Flynn says construction of the Harrison Lofts will probably be completed in less than a year. And he thinks lots of residents will appreciate short commutes to downtown Davenport, Saint Ambrose University, Palmer College, Central High School, and businesses.
